There Were Roses Tom Sands My song for you this evening it's not to make you sad Nor for adding to the sorrows of our troubled northern land But lately I've been thinking and it just won't leave my mind I'll tell you of two friends in time and they were both good friends of mine Isaac Scott, from Benagh, lived just across the fields A great man for the music and the dancing and the reels McDonald came from South Armagh to court young Alice fair And we'd often meet on the Ryan Road and the laughter filled the air There were roses Roses There were roses And the tears of the people ran together Now Isaac, he was protestant and John was catholic born But it never made a difference for their friendship it was strong And sometimes in the evenings when we heard the sound of drums We said it won't divide us.. we always will be "one" For the ground our fathers ploughed in, the soil it is the same And the places where we say our prayers have just got different names We talked about the friends who died and we hoped there'd be no more It's little when we realized the tragedy in store Chorus It was on a Sunday morning when the awful news came round Another killing had been done just outside Newry town We knew that Isaac danced up there, we knew he liked the band But when we heard that he was dead we just could not understand We gathered at the graveside on that cold and rainy day And the minister he closed his eyes and for no revenge he prayed And all of us who knew him from along the Ryan Road We bowed our heads and we said a prayer for the resting of his soul Chorus Now fear it filled the countryside, there was fear in every home 'Twas late at night, a car came prowling 'round the Ryan Road A catholic would be killed tonight to even up the score Oh christ, it's young McDonald that they've taken from the door "Isaac was my friend", he cried, he begged them with his fear But centuries of hatred grew ears that cannot hear 'An eye for an eye', it was all that filled their minds And another eye for another eye till everyone is blind Chorus So my song for you this evening it's not to make you sad It's not for adding to the sorrows of this troubled northern land But lately I've been thinking and it just won't leave my mind To tell you of two friends one time who were both good friends of mine I don't know where the moral is or where this song should end But I wonder just how many wars are fought between good friends And those who give the orders are not the ones to die It's Scott and McDonald, and the likes of you and I... |
Our Broken Hearts |

"The Town I Loved So Well" In my memory I will always see the town that I have loved so well Where our school played ball by the gasyard wall and we laughed through the smoke and the smell Going home in the rain, running up the dark lane past the jail and down behind the fountain Those were happy days in so many, many ways in the town I loved so well In the early morning the shirt factory horn called women from Creggan, the Moor and the Bog While the men on the dole played a mother's role, fed the children and then trained the dogs And when times got tough there was just about enough But they saw it through without complaining For deep inside was a burning pride in the town I loved so well There was music there in the Derry air like a language that we all could understand I remember the day when I earned my first pay And I played in a small pick-up band There I spent my youth and to tell you the truth I was sad to leave it all behind me For I learned about life and I'd found a wife in the town I loved so well But when I returned how my eyes have burned to see how a town could be brought to its knees By the armoured cars and the bombed out bars and the gas that hangs on to every tree Now the army's installed by that old gasyard wall and the damned barbed wire gets higher and higher With their tanks and their guns, oh my God, what have they done to the town I loved so well Now the music's gone but they carry on For their spirit's been bruised, never broken They will not forget but their hearts are set on tomorrow and peace once again For what's done is done and what's won is won and what's lost is lost and gone forever I can only pray for a bright, brand new day in the town I loved so well |

OK, the spirit, from the last generation.... "The Broad Black Brimmer" There´s an uniform that´s hanging in what´s known as father´s room An uniform so simple in his style It has no braid of gold or silk no hat with feathered plume Yet the mother has preserved it all the while One day she made me try it on, a wish of mine for years "In memory of your father, son" she said And when I put the Sam Browne on she was smiling with the tears As she placed the broad black brimmer on me head It´s just a broad black brimmer with ribbons frayed and torn By the careless whisk of many a mountain breeze An old trench coat that´s battle stained and worn And breeches almost threadbare at the knees A Sam Brown belt with buckle big and strong A holster that´s been empty many´s a day When Ireland wins her freedom, the men they'll choose to lead them Will wear the broad black brimmer of the IRA It was the uniform been worn by me father long ago When he reached me mothers homestead on the run It was the uniform me father wore in that little church below When oul Father Mac he blessed the pair as one And after truce and treaty and the parting of the ways He wore it when he marched out with the rest And when they bore his body down that rugged heather braes They placed the broad black brimmer on his breast MORE TO COME... |

A plate of Bangers & Mash, a pint of Guinness, some good laughter, good friends with an unquestioned bond, some deep traditional song.... and planning... lots and lots of planning. We need to build and strengthen our army and it's resources. Finally, execution. Lots and lots of execution. We'll be home one day, we'll be home. |

Charlotte.... talk it up, translate it, educate, stimulate thought, generate ideas. Cliches are annoying, but when they last a long time, it's usually not because they sound cute. It's usually because they make a statement. With that being said... Knowledge is power. Thanks, Me |

Oh, my God... That's for sure the best piece of work I've ever read. If you allow me, I'll get it translated into French and share it with some people here who aren't too tired of listenning to "my Irish stories". I've often been trying through the last 8 years to explain all that in this simple and trustworthy way. I'm afraid I failed but you did it. Good job! Slan go foill still French, still 17 and still loyal to the land of Ireland. |

Really impressed, man u said nothin but the truth, u said it there no debates or ideas its just the way it is, Im sure i know war is ugly, no one then a retarded man likes to point another man with a gun and shot him, 99% people would like to c another way to find out any solutions than killing each other... But now talking about lyrics, did someone listen this song called Snipers promisse? well it talks about a soldier. This soldier explains the whole story about one day when hes on duty waiting for an army foot patrol, when at last he saw them on hes scope he shooted once, then he heard the injured british soldier crying and begging to hes comrades to rescue him, he was crying, and scared he didnt want to die.... Well the man just sees the face of that boy in hes head everynow and again, he says to his mother that he allready knows that this awefull things have got to be, and he promisses hes mother the day the war for freedom has been won, hell put away hes gun. The man that enjoys being in a battlefield killing people (who in this world can decide the moment, and the place to finish with your life?) hes the real retard!,and thats the 1%.Of course i like peace, of course i love freedom, oh shite i even love a quiet life. But....i havnt got this life, peace comes after the payback, freedom comes after the payback, and a quiet life comes out of freedom and peace, all that means, If i have to go and die for a good reason, i would die the first one of all, and i wouldnt give a shite, at least that could demonstrate ive got nothing to lose in this life, but if i tried i could win freedom and peace, and i think were not just asking for something really strange, were only asking for our RIGHTS. So cheers GalwayGaelic, u just said the truth! |
The Root of it All |

So much has been said of Catholics versus Protestants... the North versus rest of us, the Irish versus the Brits... This sort of talk results in the totally improper focus. Just hearing this versus that, makes the listener think of two equal parties fighting over ideas and beliefs. With that limited understanding, the next thing people here is that the death of civilians has happened because one of those parties' actions. OK now... then the ill-informed general public draws their own improper conclusions. Finally, you get the people who jump in with wonderful pleas like "can't we just all get along", "can't we learn to live together and share ideas", etc., etc. The Irish Effort is failing to educate that public. By permitting the public to acquire and maintain such a vague and innaccurate understanding of the Troubles is a disservice to the problem, to the cause, and to the ultimate and proper resolution. The fight is not over which denomination of Christianity paves the correct path to Heaven. The fight is not over a North versus the South rivalry. Lastly, the fight is not between some great "unwashed" group of discontented and misbehaving citizens against their lawful and established national authority. Although simplification sometimes does injustice, sometimes complexities will also cloud the issues at hand. With that said, listen here. The Irish people basically used to have a country with 32 counties. The Brits, as they had done and continued to do with countless other countries, came over and attempted to dominate. They forced their might, their military, their culture and their laws upon the peoples or Ireland. They demanded loyalty to the Queen of England. The English were Protestant. Nothing to fight about, nothing to question, that's just the facts. BUT, they also attempted to dominate the lives of those that were not protestant. Namely, they created a legal system and countless laws that were directly aimed and worded against the Catholic people or Ireland. It was not disguised, it was not some legal wording that could be interpretted one way or the other. It was straight out terms plainly stating laws that restricted the activities and equalities of the Catholics of Ireland. So, there has been a foreign power in Ireland, they have oppressed the peoples. Recently, in this past century, they permitted these people to die by the tens of thousands, and also forced them to elect emigration to another foreign land. England at that time had plenty of food, and there is documentation that much of their food was actually exported from the starving country or Ireland! Anyway, what we now have is 800+ years of domination over Ireland. Sure, over these centuries (imagine?), many of us have simply accepted these conditions and worked to just get by throughout our lives. Many even "surrendered" to the new life and accepted it. Remember Patti Heast? She was the American who had been kidnapped by the Symbian Liberation Front. Months after (only MONTHS), she was participating with her captors, obbing a bank and having an automatic rifle slung over her shoulder. For the most part, captive people ultimately give in to their captors. The Irish are those captive people, the English are those captors. Imagine what 800 + years of captivity will do to those in captivation? Imagine what you will eventually surrender to? Because it has been so long since the Brits have invaded and dominated our Homeland, and since many of we poor captives have subconsciously surrendered over the generations... does that make it right and OK? Does that mean that the fight, this righteous fight, should be over? The bombs that fell in Heroshima and Nagasaki... they killed civilians. The bombs that fell on Berlin, they killed civilians. Do you think the Allied Powers joyfully targetted civilian people? The Allied Powers were a huge group of people who were wrongly attacked. They certainly didn't start out by killing thousands of civilians. It grew to that. Hitler did not hide behind a facade of a seemingly developed and healthy establishment, outwardly showing the purest of intentions. Hitler's people wore black as a uniform. The skull and cross bones were part of many insignia. A broken cross (swastika) was a centerpoint of their ideals. It was easy for everyone to identify Hitler and his Axis Powers as being evil and wrong. It was easy for people to sleep at night after raids and bombs killed tens, hundreds and sure thousands of enemy civilians. Ireland's troubles do not have such a clean-cut appearance. The English look like everyone else. They dress nice. Their uniforms look like the west. Their language is like the west. They have been fantastic allies with the west. England does not outwardly brandish the sword of evil. To the general viewer, Britain rules northern Ireland and rightfully so. After all, the population of that area WANT to live as Brits, right? Wrong. As a dominated people, England physically entered Ireland through the ports in and near Northern Ireland. They set up encampments and eventually industries there. Encampments need things that the locals can supply (by purchase). Industries need employees (from the local population). Industry, big and small, provides incomes. Finally, England bred their way into expanding their own population in Northern Ireland. Over the decades, generations and centuries, the very captive Irish of the North were fed, clothed and housed by their relationship with the invaders. Do you think they would bite the hand that feeds them? Do you think there is something peculiar in the soil in either the North or the South that makes one population feel one way and the other feel different? Do you think it's a coincidence? Ireland needs to be for the Irish. England can be for the English. We don't care if you are Protestant or if you are English. Like Ryan said, the unity of the Irish peoples, regardless of denomination or belief, is reflected in the basis and meaning of our flag. BUT, if you live in Ireland, you should be loyal to one Irish government. Likewise if you lived in England. Remember, Ireland didn't swim over to England, drag a bunch of British soldiers back over to Ireland and then plead with them to kick our ass and take over our country. Remember that Britain invaded Ireland, flat out. Remember that the Troubles is NOT a revolution. It is not a bunch of rag-tag trouble makers starting a war of sorts. It is a group of people loyal to their roots, their culture, their beliefs, their heritage and their home. Despite years of captivity, they have not forgotten their values. They want no deaths, they want freedom from outside opression. The Brits won't swim out, they have to be "shown" out. They won't bargain out, so we may have to push them out. As for any Irish population who is loyal to the Brits, they have a choice to leave, or to remain and work within the newly formed Irish government and system. There's no debate, there's no reason for any back-n-forth smart ass remarks. No need for anyone to pick and choose small tid-bits of history that favor their side. No need to pick out specific incidents in history that make it appear as though one side is more cruel than the other. Remember, Ireland fights to defend their land, the land of their forefathers. Britain fights to remain in posession and control of the land they have been conquering for 800+ years. There is a distinct difference. That is one hell of a mouthful, I know. With that being said, we would love to make these arrangements at the bargaining table. We would love to see the boats, planes and such take the Brits and those loyal to them... take them back to their home in England. They don't seem willing though. So, if it's war, it's war. War is ugly. War is extremely horrible. The days of the infantry lined up squarely against the other infantry is over. Now it's house to house. Houses have people. People will likely die. It will be ugly. Just as I started this little novel of mine, the issue may be education. If we in Ireland can do a better job at education, grass roots education, of our very own people as well as the sons and daughters of Ireland in America (directly to their people, NOT to their government), we will improve our odds greatly. I'm confident that we will do so. Ireland forever, my brothers and sisters. Ireland forever. |
