| The Irish flag does indeed contain Orange. Gold is just a romantic notion. Anyone who thinks it's actually Gold needs their eyes examined. The flag was first introduced by Thomas Francis Meagher during the revolutionary year of 1848 as an emblem of the Young Ireland movement, and it was often seen at meetings alongside the French tricolour. Good on ya, Charlotte! The green represents the older Gaelic and Anglo-Norman element in the population, while the orange represents the Protestant planter stock, supporters of William of Orange. The meaning of the white was well expressed by Meagher when he introduced the flag. 'The white in the centre,' he said, 'signifies a lasting truce between the 'Orange' and the 'Green' and I trust that beneath its folds the hands of the Irish Protestant and the Irish Catholic may be clasped in heroic brotherhood.' It was not until the Rising of 1916, when it was raised above the General Post Office in Dublin, that the tricolour came to be regarded as the national flag. It rapidly gained precedence over any which had existed before it, and its use as a national flag is enshrined in the Constitution of Ireland. |

| I read your comments now and again when time permits, usually with interest, but sometimes with despair. We DO NOT 'need to bomb the fuck out of Iraq and turn it into a fucking parking lot'. That's insane. Did you know that nearly half the Iraqi population is under 14 years old? What the fuck did they ever do to anybody? What we perhaps DO need to do is get a squad in there and put a bullet in the back of the Saddam's head. Him and his top echelon. Not exactly easy I grant you, but surely the CIA, MI5, Mossad, the Garda Special Branch, SOMEONE must have the capability to take this fucker out. Most Iraqis wouldn't argue. In fact I'd be bloody surprised if many of these organisations don't already have people (probably Iraqis) in deep cover. OK maybe not the Guards..they're too busy breaking up fights outside SuperMacs on Saturday nights! So we then have the problem of who replaces him, but that's no different to Afghanistan and Hamid Karzai seems to be doing a tolerable job there. |

| Thank you for the opportunity to comment. U.S Readers you should not underestimate the damage President George W. Bush's continual push for war against Iraq is doing to your and my own country Australia. The assertion that Iraq is a threat to its neighbours is not supportable, and as a threat to the west, just plain nonsense. Its attempt in 1990/91 to annex Kuwait on the justification that it lay within the pre 1917 boundaries of then Ottoman Turkish Province of Mesopotamia thereby breaking International law was clearly wrong, but just when will they stop having to pay for this action. Whilst some large U.S oil companies may in the short term get a windfall when the regime in Iraq is overthrown, in the longer term I and many other Australians believe that this administration is sowing the seeds for the next generation of terrorists by pushing for what is clearly an opportunistic war on Iraq. When will this Administration face up to the mistakes made during the Reagan and Bush Sen. years and bring to justice those former Administration Officials, Military and Security Officers who where responsible for instigating the formation, training and funding of the Afghan Mujahudin (and other Islamic Terror Groups) during the first Afghan War (1979-1990). As some of you may no doubt understand these maniacs who where trained by the CIA under their late and very mad Director Bill Casey at U.S taxpayers expenses (to the tune of 6 billion dollars) with the assistance of the Military Intelligence Organisation of Pakistan (SIS), now form the core of Al Qaeda and its Allied organisations including outfits like the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) the Indonesian Islamic terrorist organisation who were responsible for the recent Bali attack that killed so many young australians, britons and americans. Ask yourself why now, over one year since the terrible events of 9/11 none of these officials have ever been brought to book for their criminal stupidity in creating this monster. I put to you, that it could well have something to do with the fact that many of these people still occupy senior positions in the current Bush administration and believe that by promoting a diversionary war with Iraq that their past activities can be more easily sweep under the carpet. I must explain to you that because of this and other serious anomalies including the previous strong support of the U.S for Saddam Hussein during the 1980ies (when further billions of U.S taxpayers money were handed over to support Iraq in its war with Iran - a war in which over one and a half million died) that it is with great concern (and sorrow) to many people in our country that the Australian Governments has agreed to deploy troops to the Gulf in support of your country. Many of us believe this deployment probably will do more to harm to Our nation than any decision made in Australia since we disastrously agreed to commit troops to Vietnam. It should remembered that this deployment does not have the support of the great majority of Australians. Polls are routinely showing that more than 75 % of us are against Australian involvement in this illegal and immoral war, even if George W Bush does have our Prime Minister John Howard's acquiescence.
