Exactly.
Lets say we were to use the Armalite and blow the Brits out of Ireland.
It is DEFINITE that then, the Loyalists will start their own campaign.

QUOTE (LAN' @ Jan 22 2004, 07:13 AM) |
The North wants to remain British. That was proven in the last general election a few weeks ago in which all (Republican and Unionist had the chance to vote). |
To carry my example of gunmen in your second floor a bit further, dear LAN, in that situation the majority upstairs would vote that the squatters should be allowed to stay.
If we can select a small enough sample of the people of Ireland we'll find a 100% agreement for any stupid thing. The point is that it's not up to just the people in the Six Counties to decide on a matter that affects the whole island.
Chucky expressed his concern for what would happen if the BA just pulled out overnight. Naturally there would be problems, and I'm not saying that just packing up and leaving would be the best solution. What I am saying, however, is that the British presence in the North of ire is unjust, unwanted and illegal.

Nobody is being ridiculous !
We all want a United ireland on here. Lan was merely pointing out the constitutional and logistic problems that, sadly, are the realities of the situation.
If the British government just pulled out now and allowed us our 32 county republic then how do you envisage the streets of Ulster ? Just imagine all those orange men with their bowler hats and sashes waving the tricolour.
Let's get real ! You cannot look at this in such simplistic terms !! |
I never said there would be no troubles. I said it was ridiculous to try to find a compromise in a situation in which there's none possible. I'm waiting for ur suggestion of a compromise that would get everyone happy. Moreover, I wouldn't mind the Orange bastards. Those are only fascists, I'm not even willing to hear anything of what they have to say. But i'm ready to deal with other unionists. But it couldn't go further than promising they should be safe and free when Ireland is one again.

hmmm, I think LAN is a republican and at the same time he is none...
he tried to get the views of the opposing site... am I right with that point, Lan?
but you... we should never forget the heroes that did fall for the republic, were beaten on the battlefields, shoot or hung, or dwelled in the prisons...
we would dishonor them by giving up a united Ireland, dishonor the cause for which they fougth and died...
but we should try it with a peacfull way, we should do it for Eire that mourns for freedom

I love this. Sensible debate. Cool.
One point Lan made which is irrefutable is that when there were elections North and South the overwhelming majority voted for peace and the GFA. Like it or hate it you must back up the mandate of the majority. That's why the provos are in cessation. All those calling for a return to war are clearly against the wishes of the majority of the Irish people.

Yes Chucky, they voted for the GFA and devolved government.
Where is it now?

Good point Fianna.
So if we go back to direct rule (from Westminster) it will be interesting to see what Sinn Fein decide. And then what the provos do next.
Let's watch this space mo chara.
Our day WILL come.

For all intents and purposes the Six Counties are under direct rule.
And sure why should Unionists budge to even share power? They have the grand life, getting paid a handsome salary by the most stable employer in the world for refusing to form a government of elected representatives and obstructing the "wishes of the majority".
Ain't democracy great?

Sorry, Charlotte... it was not my intention to lock anyone out by language...
This Gidhlig (Scottish Gaelic) song is from Runrig,
written by Calum McDonald.
Published on the "Recovery" album 1981, if I'm right...
It is named "Tir an airm" - "Land of the army"
"Nis leugh t-eachdraich, fosgail suil
Anns gach linn mu dhoigh an Airm
Stampadh air na croitean seagail
'S beathannan og aig gillean Uibhist"
"Now read the history, open (your) eyes
For every generation and the military way
Stamping on the rye in the fields
And on the lives of the boys of Uist"
...I hope my translation is right, as it is 3 o'clock @night
and I'm feckin' tired...
Oche mhaith le cheile, good night together....
