This is just a really pretty song...but I want to know the meaning behind it...I really need to get my Irish Gaelic lessons moving so I can stop pestering you everytime I have a question (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Dia dhuit, a Lisa!

It's a song about matchmaking... and about that to marry for love is sometimes a luxury that cannot be afforded... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Here are the lyrics that I know:

(Note that the title is slightly different, as there are usually a dozen of versions to a song. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)
"T mo chleamhnas a dhanamh" means the same as "T mo chleamhnas danta", just another grammatical form.)

T Mo Chleamhnas Danta
(My Match Is Made)

T mo chleamnhas danta athr arir
S'n mngo dtaithnonn an bhean liom fin
ach fgfaidh m i mo dhiaidh i
'gus imeoidh m liom fin
ar fud na gcoillte craobhach.

My match it was made here last night
to a girl I neither love nor like
but I'll take my own advice
and leave her behind
and go roaming the wild woods over.

Shil mise thoir agus shil mise thiar
Shil mise Corcaigh 'gus sride Bhail' tha Cliath
ach smhil de mo chailn deas ni fhaca mise riamh.
'Si an bhean dubh a dh'fhg mo chroi crite.

I walked up and I walked down.
I walked to Cork, and Dublin and Belfast towns,
but no equal to my true love could I find,
She's the wee lass that's left my heart broken.

D'irigh m ar maidin dh uair roimh an l
'gus fuair m litir mo mhile ghr.
Chuala m an smiln 's an londubh r
gur ealiagh mo ghr thar sile.

I got up two hours before day
and I got a letter from my true love.
I heard the blackbird and the linnet say
that my love had crossed the ocean.

Of course, there are many other versions, but basically they resemble the same meaning.

Hope I could help,

#Roidsear

Well, just as I said... here's another version, this time from Altan:

T Mo Chleamhnas A Dhanamh

T mo chleamhnas dhanamh inniu agus inn
'S n m n go dtaitnonn an bhean uda liom fin
Ach fugfidh m mo dhiaidh , is rachaidh m leat fin
Sos fna coille craobhaigh

A match was a-making here last night
And it isn't with the girl that I love the best
I'll leave her behind and I'll go along with you
Down by the banks of the ocean

'Mo codladh go h-eadarshuth b'aite liom fin
Leaba luachair a bheith faoi mo thaobh
Buideal branda a bheith faoi cheann
'S mo chailn deas g 'bheith ar lmh' liom

Sleeping to milking time is my delight
A bed of green rushes underneath my side
A bottle of brandy underneath my head
And a charming young maid in my arms

Shiil mise thoir agus shiil mise thiar
Shiil mise Corcaigh 'gus sraideanna Bhaile' Cliath
Macasamhail mo chailn n fhaca mise riamh
'S 'n bhean a d'fhg mo chro crite

Oh I walked east and I walked west
I walked Cork and Dublin's streets
An equal to my love I didn't meet
She's the wee lass that's left my heart broken

Sln,
