I was reading some text from the GFA and wanted to know what a 'super-sanger' is. There was suppose to be one taken down at Newtownhamilton Police station. Also, does anyone know if the Observation towers were removed from Sturgan mountain and Camlough mountain?

A 'super-sanger' is a large British army built base. It has a 'submarine' under the ground containing bunks, a gym and canteen, etc. for the troops stationed there for their tour of duty. Above the ground is the usual computers, cameras and associated watch tower paraphanalia. I believe their is one in South Armagh named after a dead Paratrooper.

You can see a picture of such a building at

Several of these 'super-sangers' were built in one fell swoop in a massive operation called 'Operation Condor', whereby the Royal Marines / RIR closed the roads to the I.R.A., allowing the Brit's to built/rebuild their watchtowers, landing pads and 'sangars' without fear of attacks from the South Armagh Brigade.

Nonetheless, several weeks after they were built, mortars fired from the back of a lorry meant that the whole rebuild process had to be restarted again.

Thank you and welcome to the forum. It looks like someone had already shot paintballs at it. laugh.gif

Doesn't look very impressive on the pic... How large are they for average?
