Mmmh I've once heard it, but can't remember.
I still love the real one anyway, tourists' song or not...

Ive never heard the lyrics you quoted, but I can submit another parody:

Danny Boy, Rest in Pieces
by Shay Vino

I met him in a pub one night
In a crowd of Well-to-do's
He had a claddagh on each finger
And a shamrock on each shoe.
And when he said Top o' the Mornin'
My heart was filled with dread.
Well he said his name was Danny Boy
So I shot him in the head.

Raise up a cheer and lift your pints
And hold them way up high.
And sing a song of tragedy beneath the Irish sky.
From the glen the pipes are calling,
But he never will reply.
For I buried Danny Boy beneath
the fields of Athenry.

Tu-ra-lu
Tu-ra-lu
Tu-ra-lay
Tu-ra-Lay
I thought I might drop him in Gallway Bay.
Tu-ra-lu
Tu-ra-lu
Tu-ra-lye
Tu-ra-Lye
Well I buried Danny Boy beneath
the fields of Athenry.

Well the guarda, they fell upon me
And they took away my gun.
And a hush fell o'er the crowd
When they saw what I had done.
Said the guarda, "God forgive me,
For I'm sure in hell to burn."
Then he shot poor Danny once again
To make sure he won't return.

Chorus

Well, some call me a hero
And some call me a fiend.
But they still sing his sad ol' song
While drinking beer dyed toxic green.
But my sentence, it was commuted.
It seems I'm off scott free.
Well, I think I'll have another pint
And wait for Michael Flatley.

Chorus
Charlotte
What a pity Danny Boy song is so unpopular in its own country. A wonderful song, with a wonderful air unlucky enough to be loved by the whole world and most particularly by this category of people called tourists. Overheard song, maybe, but still a beautiful one...
Zuzana
Youre right, Charlotte; Danny Boy is a beautiful song. Its just a pity that hardly anybody is able to perform it without burying the tune under tons of snivelling and saccharine (I mean the song, not the instrumental Londonderry Air). Sometimes one would think that singers compete to whom it will take longer time to get through the song and who will cry more buckets of tears getting through it. I guess that the most appalling example is Diana Krall (on Chieftains album Tears Of Stone), who needs over six (!) minutes to cope with Danny Boy and croons it as if each breath should be her last one. No wonder that after hearing something like that some people would prefer to see Danny Boy resting in pieces! wink.gif

When we are at it, whose version of Danny Boy do you think the best? I like the one by Noel McLoughlin and of course biggrin.gif by the Pogues.
Charlotte
Sinead O'Connor's version might be even longer than Diana Krall's one (O'Connor added three more stanzas to the song). Yet it is still a wonderful song and my favourite version of it.
As for tears, just a little quote I found in a book and attributed to Father Finnegan (fictive character?) in Donegal in a French book called Deux Vagabonds en Irlande (Two Wanderers in Ireland) : "We hate war so much and it makes us sing. We love music so much and it makes us cry".
Zuzana
To everything there is a season... A time to sing, a time to cry...

Maybe Im the type of person who prefers singing. However, long live diversity! (in singing and everything else) smile.gif

By the way, for all who are interested, Danny Boy by Shane MacGowan can be listened to and downloaded from the following website (there are also some pics of Northern Ireland to view to pass away the time while downloading):

What do you think about this version?

The pictures are GREAT! smile.gif

As for parody lyrics... Here you are:

By Author #1
Oh Andy boy, the pints the pints are calling.
From pub to pub and through the Tenderlion.
The whiskeys gone and the keg is spitting.
Tis you must go tis you must go and I must cry.
But come ye back, with Guinness and a hobo.
Or when the whiskeys flowing like capistrano.
Cause I'll be there in the gutter in the shadows.
Oh Andy boy, oh Andy boy I love you so.

By Author #2
Oh, Paddy boy, the pints, the pints are calling,
From pub to pub, within five minutes' ride;
They seem to say, "Come soon, for we are waiting
For you to find a place for us inside."
Come to the Hold, for lo 't is -----day evening,
And Yurinnites devout are thither bound:
Come to the Hold, and start the evening's drinking,
For Paddy boy, oh Paddy boy, it is your round.

By Author #3
Oh Terry boy, the pints, the pints are calling
From bar to bar, across old Erin's Isle
The fine black stout will slide right down your thrapple
And from your eyes will shine a twinkling smile.
So raise a glass and toast yer man St. Paddy
And wish good luck to all who cross your door
A raised cor-BEEN to every passing colleen
Tonight's the night, the Crooked Man will score.

No ideas about names (either authors' or bands' ones), sorry.

To Zuzana
Thanks for sharing your (Shay Vino) version !!!
Brilliant!

Can you stand one more? wink.gif

OH BOY, DANNY
by Peter Benson and Jeff Porterfield

Oh, Danny boy, they claim that you are Irish
But we both know you're English through and through
And if you really want to know what I wish
I truly wish that I had never heard of you
'Cause every March they make me sing about you
And every drunkard thinks that he can too
And when they miss that high note it's so painful
That if you heard it I think it would kill you too

Oh, Danny boy, when Irish eyes were smiling
It was before they ever heard of you.
In Galway Bay the tides are still retiring
Because that song you caused has made them blue.
So don't come back in summer or in springtime
Don't show your face at state or county fair.
Some drunken sot will sing your praises loudly;
And we find that we must ban your Derry air.

So Danny boy, we'll raise our glasses to you.
And thank the Lord you've left for God knows where.
Black Velvet Band is being sung in lieu of you,
And we would rather go to Hell for her.
But we remember how you raised our glasses,
And made our voices ring the whole night long.
So Danny boy, although we love you dearly
Hit the road and take your misbegotten song. mad.gif

Be called English, that might be a bit too much of an insult for poor Danny!
Zuzana
No wonder with a song whose lyrics were written by an English lawyer... Tg go bg (take it easy); Danny as a typical paddy surely abounds in the Irish sense of black humour which will help him laugh at the insult. biggrin.gif
Charlotte
That reminds me of a joke.
Three Englishmen enter a pub in which an Irishman is drinking alone. They decide to provoke a fight. The first Englshman goes to see the Irishman and says :
"hey Paddy, I've heard your Saint Patrick was a bastard"
But the Irishman does not answer at all. The Englishman goes back to his friends, a bit puzzled. The second says "well' I'll try again", goes to the Irishman and says :
"hey Paddy, I've heard your Saint Patrick was a queer"
But the Irishman doesn't even look at him. So the third Englishman says "well I know something that will make him react." He goes to the Irishman and says :
"Hey Paddy, I've heard your Saint Patrick was ENGLISH"
The Irishman looks at him and says :
"yes, that's what your two friends were saying".

I think I know just the song you're talking about:

Oh Danny boy, the pints, the pints are callin',
From inn to inn and down the mountain's side,
The whiskey's gone, the candle light is diein',
I'm not pissed enough, but blessed Mary knows I've tried,
But come ye back when gin is in the flagon,
And when the tavern floor is drenched with blood,
'Cause I'll be here and I'll be off the wagon,
Oh Danny boy, oh danny boy,
You're such a bud.

I think it was done by a band called Captain Tractor.

The Skels also did a version of this, live - right before they thrashed into A Dublin Lullaby - glorious!

Anyhow, of I should recommend a version of the traditional, I'd recommend Shane MacGowan's version on "The Rare Oul' Stuff" - no overdone mushiness, only the pure spirit of Danny Boy himself, incarnated into the tune - 2.31 minutes.

- Which IS a lovely tune, if done right.
