Personally, I interpret it as talking about society and how critical people have gotten of others.
Then again, I know next to nothing, so pay me no mind.
By the way, has anyone seen the film "the lottery"? This song reminds me of it.

Don't know why, but those lyrics remind me of a poem written by Bertolt Brecht, I think. It goes as follows:

"First they came for the Communists, and I didn't speak up,
because I wasn't a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up,
because I wasn't a Jew.
Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up,
because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me, and by that time there was no one
left to speak up for me."

I had never heard of the song before, but as I was reading the lyrics, this poem came to my mind :-) Probably there is no logical connection between them... but I have never been very logical, despite being a computer programmer
