Middle ages I'm not sure about, probably would prefer a hand-and-a-half "war sword" or bastard sword as these broadswords are sometimes called. Something with a cutting edge a point for thrusting. I kinda like this "Sword of the Keltoi".

My favourite would have to be a rapier, perhaps this "Spanish Caress" one. An elegant weapon for a more civilized time.
