Read 'Oliver's Army' and Celebrate 30 Years of TOM

To mark Troops Out Movement's 30th Anniversary we commissioned author Aly Renwick, one of TOM's founders, to write a history of British soldiers' involvement in Ireland. Renwick, an ex-soldier who had himself served for a short time in Ireland in 1968 drew together material he had been collecting and working on for the past 35 years and produced a major new radical history of, as he states: "The armed men who have travelled from Britain across the narrow strip of water called the Irish Sea to seek conquest and wage war in Ireland".

'Oliver's Army - A History of British Soldiers in Ireland and other Colonial Conflicts' will be published, one chapter each month, on this website during 2004.

'Oliver's Army' pulls no punches and offers a compelling alternative view from that found in the mass of books in the military section of most bookshops. Clearly detailing the motivation behind the use of troops, 'Oliver's Army' also offers a unique insight into their operations. Written provokingly, 'Oliver's Army' will spark debate and TOM welcomes feedback from readers, so please feel free to send us your thoughts and comments.

The first chapter of 'Oliver's Army' will appear for viewing and downloading on this website, for one month only, from 15th January 2004. Each succeeding chapter will then appear, again for one month only, on the 15th of each following month throughout the year.

The First Six Chapters

Below, we have published details of the first six chapters which take the history up to 1968. Details of the next six chapters, which cover the course of the conflict in the north of Ireland over the past three decades, will be published on this website later in 2004.

Designed to be printed out as well as read on screen, we recommend that you obtain a loose-leaf folder to keep the chapters in. If for any reason our members cannot print out a copy themselves, they can contact us and we will send them a monthly copy of each chapter for 6 within the UK and 10 outside the UK including p+p.
