hi

I've heard the name "Paddy" in a few songs (e.g. Rocky Road to Dublin, McAlpine's Fusiliers by the Dubliners)

but who was Paddy? or what does the name mean?

Sometimes Paddy might even be a reference to the parton saint of Ireland, Saint Patrick, but usually "Paddy" is just a general refence to an Irish person. Common names, especially Paddy and Mick are often used like this, as are sometimes Bill and Dan (a bit like "every Tom, Dick and Harry knows..."). Some Irish people will take offence at being called Paddy or Mick, whereas some will use the words gladly.

It's just the way the word is used, I guess? Usually in phrases like "drunken Paddies all over the place" or "you stupid ignorant Mick bastard". On the other hand, I often describe something I like very much as "Paddy". But that's just me. Maybe one of our resident Micks could answer you better? :D

It depends who calls you a Paddy. If a foreigner called me a Paddy I'd take it as an insult, but if a mate or another Irishman called me "Paddy" I know he's just taking the piss. It's the same with Fenian. Your comrades can call you a Fenian bastard all they like, but as soon as a Brit calls you one you're making death threats against his family.

I guess it's the same as calling a black person a Nigger. That's racism, but they call themselves Nigger all the time.

A brit tourist in Ireland asks a man:
- Hey, Paddy, can you tell me the way to a Post Office?
- How did you know I'm Partrick by name?
- I have guessed.
- Then guess where is a Post Office, bustard!

Yes Paddy is short for all of those and also for the female version of Patrick, Patricia. My name is Patricia and I get called Paddy by some people, but I wouldn't find it offensive :D
